Uninor Rises Among TelCos & Adds Most Users In the New Year

Uninor came out as a winner in January as it recorded highest addition of subscribers among all GSM service providers.

Born out of Telenor & Unitech merger, Uninor, relatively small player on the Indian GSM turf managed to add 2.49 Million subscribers in January 2012. Uninor now has close to 40 Million users. Not surprisingly, GSM operators enjoyed another month of great additions with total number of subscriptions now crossing 650 Million confirmed by Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI). In retrospection, GSM operators added 7.55 Million in December.

Uninor is under a cloud of misery owing to the bitter fight between its parent companies Telenor & Unitech. It is furious owing to the apparent “breach of contract” that manifested itself from cancellation of its 22 licenses of 2G operations in India. Meanwhile, Unitech has simply chosen to pass the blame on to the Government. Under such bitter circumstances we wonder what did Uninor do differently, to garner such high number of subscribers?

Tariff plans aside, GSM companies have to cater to the need of seamless connectivity for its users. Additionally, they have realized that the way to lock-in a customer is to offer exclusive Value Added Services (VAS). One reason that we could think of is the tricks the TelCos might be playingwith their subscribers of delaying or denying Portability of their numbers. With a strong customer-centric focus & better service, Uninor might have been able to persuade subscribers to give this comparatively little player a chance.

Now it all depends how the Telecom companies who have lost their licenses rebound. Uninor, apparently was the first to dust-off & confirm its readiness to bid in the upcoming fresh auctions. It really reflects well on a company that despite the in-fighting, has not only managed to stay afloat, but grown as well.

Let’s see how Telenor-backed Uninor, fares in the coming months
